Bermuda Arbitration and Mediation Services

The Branch has been in existence since 1996 and is active in encouraging and promoting the use of Arbitration and Mediation as an alternative to traditional litigation as the means for resolving disputes.

The Branch operates an appointments scheme for use by any party who wishes to have an arbitrator or mediator, knowledgeable about the process and who will ensure that the appointment is carried out in a scrupulously fair manner in accordance with established rules appointed by a neutral body. The person chosen will be the one that the Appointments' Committee considers to have the most suitable credentials for the nature of the dispute.

The Branch is also charged with running the Bermuda International Commercial Arbitration Center presently established at Bermuda College and while it has excellent facilities for the holding of arbitrations and mediations, its location has not proved suitable to garner the reputation needed for a world-class centre. The Branch has been looking for dedicated premises in the city of Hamilton. It is our view that a city location is necessary to make the centre viable and meet the needs of internationally based users. While there has been little cooperation from our Government, we continue our endeavours to look for a first class facility in the city and look forward to being in a position to announce the new home of the Centre. In the meantime, the Chief Justice of Bermuda, Richard Ground OBE QC, has confirmed that the new Commercial Court premises on Parliament Street can be utilized for arbitrations and anyone interest in booking space should contact our organizational secretary, Mrs Annwen Stirling, on + 1 441 295 4540. Bermuda time is one hour ahead of New York and 4 hours behind London.
